Item: BMM38

Sculpted by: Aaron Brown
Box Art Painted by: Sang Eon Lee
THE 8TH CUIRASSIER REGIMENT WAS RAISED IN MARCH OF 1815 AND GARRISONED IN KOLIN –DEUTZ. THE REGIMENT WAS FIRST FORMED AS A DRAGOON REGIMENT DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS.

THE 8TH CUIRASSIERS WERE NAMED IN HONOR OF GRAF (COUNT) GASSIER. FRIEDRICH LEOPOLD GRAF VON GESSLER (OR GEßLER; (24 JUNE 1688 – 22 AUGUST 1762) WAS A PRUSSIAN GENERALFELDMARSCHALL AND ONE OF FREDERICK THE GREAT’S MOST FAMOUS CAVALRY GENERALS. GESSLER WAS BORN IN SCHWARZENAU IN THE DUCHY OF PRUSSIA. HE ENTERED AN INFANTRY REGIMENT IN KÖNIGSBERG IN 1703, BECOMING A CADET ON 6 JUNE. HE FOUGHT UNDER LEOPOLD I, PRINCE OF ANHALT-DESSAU, IN THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION. AFTER TEN YEARS OF SERVICE FOR THE HOLY ROMAN EMPERORS, GESSLER RETURNED TO THE PRUSSIAN ARMY IN 1713 AS RITTMEISTER IN THE REGIMENT PANNWITZ ZU PFERDE.

ON 21 JANUARY 1714, GESSLER WAS PROMOTED TO MAJOR AND TRANSFERRED TO A DRAGOON REGIMENT. GESSLER WAS SUCCESSIVELY PROMOTED: OBERSTLEUTNANT ON 1 MAY 1720; COMMANDER OF THE REGIMENT SCHULENBURG GRENADIERE ZU PFERDE ON 16 AUGUST 1726; OBERST ON 21 SEPTEMBER 1729; COMMANDER OF THE 4TH CUIRASSIER REGIMENT ON 3 MAY 1733; GENERALMAJOR ON 14 JULY 1739; AND GENERALLEUTNANT ON 17 MAY 1742.

DURING THE FIRST SILESIAN WAR, GESSLER DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF AT MOLLWITZ AND AT CHOTUSITZ, IN WHICH HE LED THE CAVALRY OF WILHELM DIETRICH VON BUDDENBROCK’S LEFT WING. AFTER THE BATTLE, GESSLER WAS PROMOTED TO GENERALLEUTNANT AND AWARDED THE ORDER OF THE BLACK EAGLE. IN THE BATTLE OF HOHENFRIEDBERG, HIS RIDE WITH THE BAYREUTH DRAGOON REGIMENT, IN WHICH 67 STANDARDS WERE CAPTURED, BECAME ONE OF THE MOST STORIED ATTACKS OF THE PRUSSIAN CAVALRY. IN THE BATTLE OF KESSELSDORF ON 15 DECEMBER 1745, GESSLER LED THE CAVALRY OF THE RIGHT WING. GESSLER WAS PROMOTED TO GENERAL DER KAVALLERIE ON 26 MAY 1747 AND TO GENERALFELDMARSCHALL ON 21 DECEMBER 1751.

THE COLONEL IN CHIEF OF THE REGIMENT IN 1913 WAS KING GEORGE V OF GREAT BRITAIN. THE UNIFORM KOLLER (TUNIC) IS YELLOW-WHITE KIRSEY WITH LIGHT GREEN (SEA GREEN) FACINGS. THE BUTTONS ARE YELLOW-BRASS. THE CUIRASS IS POLISHED STEEL WITH BRASS STUDS AND BRASS HINGES BACKED BY LEATHER. PLEASE NOTE THIS CUIRASS IS MAKER MARKED 1889 ON THE FRONT. THE CUIRASS HAS THE CUSTOMARY BULLET DENT ON THE FRONT FROM A FACTORY TEST SHOT. OTHERS SAY THE BULLET MARK IS AN INITIATION OF THE TROOPER BY THE OFFICERS, WHERE AS THE TROOPER WORE THE CUIRASS AND THE OFFICER FIRED A BULLET INTO THE CUIRASS TO TEST THE COURAGE OF THE TROOPER. THE HELMET IS POLISHED STEEL WITH BRASS FITTING.

THE BUST IS BASED ON THE COMPLETE 8TH CUIRASSER REGIMENT TROOPERS UNIFORM IN THE CRAMER MUSEUM.

Germany created a number of successful schwerer Panzerspahwagen (“heavy armored reconnaissance vehicles”) to support its forces. Among them was the family based on the Sd.Kfz.231 8-Rad (“eight-wheel”) design. The Sd.Kfz.232 accommodated extra radio equipment and a large frame antenna for longer-distance communication. The armored car’s Bussing-NAG 8×8 chassis offered good cross-country mobility and the vehicle also possessed eight-wheel steering. There were dual driver’s controls, which meant the vehicle could drive rapidly in either direction if it came under attack. The 8.3-tonne design was ordered in 1934, and both the Sd.Kfz.231 and 232 featured a hexagonal-shaped turret mounting a 2cm KwK 30 cannon plus one MG34 machine gun. Production of the Sd.Kfz.232 ceased in 1943 in favor of the newer Sd.Kfz.234/2 Puma.

Dragon has produced yet another brand new plastic kit! The Sd.Kfz.232 features all-new toolings, and the upper and lower hull sections are made as one-piece elements via slide molds. The large armored car is composed of many irregularly shaped and angled plates, so the kit obviously requires extremely precise tolerances when it fits together. Thanks to the use of CAD drawings and high-tech molding techniques, the vehicle’s parts fit together flawlessly. The unique shape of this 8×8 armored vehicle is beautifully captured, and the distinctive antenna frame is finely rendered. Dragon already has high-quality 1/72 scale Panzer III kits available, so the arrival of the Sd.Kfz.232 now gives these early-war panzers a valuable reconnaissance capability!
AVAILABLE: February 2012
